Disciplines of a Godly Family

The family unit has always been a fundamental aspect of society, as the building block for individuals and communities. In today's fast-paced world, the concept of a Godly family may seem outdated or unattainable. However, with the proper guidance and discipline, a Godly family can be a reality for anyone. In this blog, we will delve into the various disciplines of a Godly family, drawing inspiration from biblical scriptures.

a. Discipline of Love and Respect: The foundation of a Godly family is built on love and respect. This discipline requires each family member to show unconditional love and respect to one another. This means valuing each other's opinions, feelings, and needs. In modern times, where individualistic attitudes prevail, it can be challenging to practice this discipline. However, we can look to the example of the Proverbs 31 woman in the Bible, who is described as one who "speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue" (Proverbs 31:26). This teaches us that our words and actions should always be filled with love and respect for those around us, especially within our family.

b. Discipline of Communication: Effective communication is another essential discipline of a Godly family. In today's world, with the advancement of technology, we are more connected than ever before. However, ironically, this has resulted in a lack of meaningful communication within families. In a Godly family, communication is not just about talking but listening and understanding the needs of each family member. Jesus stresses the importance of communication in Matthew 18:15, "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you." This verse emphasizes the need for open and honest communication within the family, even during conflict.

c. Discipline of Forgiveness: No family is perfect, and misunderstandings are inevitable. Forgiveness is crucial in nurturing a Godly family. Forgiving when we feel hurt or wronged can be challenging. Still, God commands us to forgive as he has forgiven us (Colossians 3:13). When we forgive each other, we let go of bitterness and resentment, allowing love and unity to thrive within the family.

d. Discipline of Discipline: While the word "discipline" may have a negative connotation, it is an essential aspect of a Godly family. This discipline involves setting boundaries, establishing rules, and instilling good values and virtues in children. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it." Discipline can be challenging, but it is necessary for a Godly family to thrive and raise children who follow in God's ways.

e. Discipline of Worship: Last but not least, a Godly family has the discipline of worship. This involves making God the center of the family and regularly setting aside time for prayer, reading the Bible, and attending church together. In 1 Chronicles 16:11, we are reminded to "Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually." When we worship together, we strengthen our relationship with God and with each other.

In summary, a Godly family requires discipline in various areas, such as love and respect, communication, forgiveness, discipline, and worship. While it may seem daunting to implement these disciplines in our modern-day society, we can draw inspiration from biblical teachings and examples of modern-day families who have successfully fostered a Godly family. Let us strive to cultivate these disciplines in our families, and may God bless and guide us on this journey.
