Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) - You Decide - Biblically!

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become buzzwords in various industries and communities, highlighting the importance of recognizing and embracing differences among individuals. DEI for people of color is a complex and multifaceted topic with both positive and negative aspects. In this article, we will explore the benefits and drawbacks of DEI for people of color, supported by Biblical principles.

First, let us define diversity, equity, and inclusion. Diversity refers to the variety of identities and characteristics an individual possesses, such as race, ethnicity, gender, and religion. Equity focuses on ensuring fair treatment and access to opportunities for everyone, regardless of background. Inclusion creates a welcoming and respectful environment in which all individuals feel valued and included.

DEI POSITIVES

1. Celebrating God's Diverse Creation—God's creation is diverse, and as Christians, we are called to honor and celebrate its beauty. Embracing diversity through DEI allows us to appreciate the unique qualities and backgrounds of people of color and recognize that we are all made in God's image. In the book of Galatians, Paul writes, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). This verse highlights the importance of inclusivity and equality in God's eyes, regardless of race or social status.

2. Increased Representation - DEI efforts strive to ensure that people of color are represented and included in decision-making processes, leadership roles, and other areas. This representation can lead to diverse perspectives and ideas, making organizations and communities more innovative and successful. The Bible also emphasizes the importance of diversity in leadership. In Exodus 18:21, Moses is advised to select "able men from all the people - men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain" to help him lead the Israelites. This passage shows that God values diversity in leadership and that including people of color brings unique strengths to the table.

3. Promoting Social Justice—DEI initiatives aim to address systemic discrimination and promote social justice for people of color. By providing equal opportunities and fair treatment, DEI can help level the playing field and break down barriers that have historically hindered people of color from achieving their full potential. The Bible also addresses the issue of injustice and emphasizes the importance of standing up for the oppressed. Proverbs 31:8-9 says, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." As Christians, we are called to advocate for justice and equality for all, including people of color.

DEI NEGATIVES

1. Tokenism—One drawback of DEI initiatives is the risk of tokenism, the practice of using a small number of people of color to increase diversity without addressing systemic issues. This can lead to individuals being hired or promoted based on their race rather than their qualifications, causing resentment and perpetuating stereotypes. The Bible reminds us to avoid showing partiality and treating people differently based on their social status. James 2:9 states, "But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers." Rather than tokenism, we should focus on creating equal opportunities for all individuals.

2. Lack of Understanding and Cultural Competence - A lack of understanding and cultural competence can also hinder DEI efforts. To develop a deeper understanding of people of color's experiences and perspectives, it is crucial to genuinely listen, learn, and engage with them.

The book of Proverbs encourages us to seek wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 4:7 says, "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding." As Christians, we should strive to understand and respect the cultures and experiences of people of color, rather than imposing our own biases and assumptions.

3. Division and Polarization—Unfortunately, DEI initiatives can sometimes have the unintended consequence of creating division and polarization. When individuals and groups feel that they are being left out or treated unfairly, this can lead to resentment and tension.

As Christians, we are called to pursue unity and reconciliation. In 1 Corinthians 12:25-26, Paul writes, "So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it." We must strive to build bridges rather than walls, promoting unity and understanding.

In summary, DEI efforts have both positives and negatives when it comes to people of color. Christians must embrace diversity, advocate for justice, and promote unity and understanding. Using Biblical principles as our guide, we can navigate the complexities of DEI and strive for a world where all individuals are valued and included.
