Forgiveness

In a world where grudges and bitterness seem to be the norm, the concept of forgiveness can feel foreign. However, for Christians, forgiveness is not just a mere suggestion but a fundamental aspect of our faith. It is a commandment given to us by God, and its significance can be traced back to the pages of the Bible. In this article, we will explore the biblical aspects of forgiveness in an unforgiving world, with a thorough explanation and scriptural support.

First and foremost, forgiveness is essential to our relationship with God. The Bible teaches us that God is a forgiving God, and He expects us to follow in His footsteps. In Colossians 3:13, we are instructed to “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” This verse highlights the importance of forgiveness and the standard God has set for us. As believers, we are called to forgive others just as God has forgiven us.

Now, in a society where hurt and betrayal are all too common, the act of forgiveness can seem daunting. However, the Bible offers practical ways to forgive in today's world. Allow me to share three numbered methods, supported by scripture, to practice forgiveness in our unforgiving society.

1. Forgive with humility and love.

One of the first steps to forgiveness is acknowledging and accepting our faults and shortcomings. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 28:13, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” When we humbly confess our sins and ask for forgiveness, we open our hearts to God's grace, which enables us to forgive others. Additionally, 1 Peter 4:8 reminds us that “love covers a multitude of sins.” This means that when we choose to love others, we also choose to forgive them.

2. Forgive with a spirit of reconciliation.

Forgiveness is not just about letting go of anger and resentment; it is also about seeking reconciliation with the person who has wronged us. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus instructs us, “if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First, go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking reconciliation with our brothers and sisters before presenting our offerings to God.

3. Forgive with an eternal perspective.

Amid hurt and pain, it can be challenging to forgive someone who has caused us harm. However, Christians are called to see beyond our present circumstances and keep an eternal perspective. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But your Father will not forgive your sins if you do not forgive others.” Our forgiveness is not just about the person who has wronged us but also about our relationship with God and our eternal destiny.

In summary, forgiveness may seem difficult to grasp in a world that often glorifies revenge and holds grudges. However, as Christians, we are called to embody the biblical aspects of forgiveness. We can forgive in the modern-day environment through humility, love, reconciliation, and an eternal perspective, and find freedom from unforgiveness. Let us heed the words of Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
