Who Are You?

In a world where identity is often defined by external factors such as wealth, success, and appearance, it can be easy to lose sight of our true identity. As believers, however, our identity is found in something far greater and unchanging – our identity in Christ. But who are we in Christ? And why is it so essential to understand and embrace this identity? To answer these questions, we must first turn to the Word of God – the ultimate authority on our identity. Colossians 2:9-10 says, "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority." This verse reminds us that we are complete and lacking nothing in Christ because He is the source of all power and authority.

Another verse that speaks to our identity in Christ is 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" This powerful truth highlights the transformation in our identity when we surrender our lives to Jesus. Our past mistakes or shortcomings no longer define us; instead, we are a new creation in Him.

Furthermore, Ephesians 1:4-5 says, "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love, he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will." These verses reveal that we are not only chosen by God but also adopted as His children through Christ. Our identity in Christ is not just a mere label but a part of our inheritance as sons and daughters of the Most High God.

As we continue to dig deeper into understanding our identity in Christ, we must also remember that our identity is defined by what Christ has done for us, not by our own actions or achievements. Romans 3:22 says, "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile." Our righteousness and worthiness come from Jesus and what He accomplished on the cross for us. This truth sets us free from the pressure of having to earn our identity and instead allows us to rest in the finished work of Christ.

Embracing our identity in Christ also means understanding that we are called to be ambassadors for Him. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God." As ambassadors, we represent Christ and His kingdom here on earth. Our identity in Him is not just for our own benefit; it equips us to share the Gospel with others and fulfill our purpose in His kingdom.

Understanding who we are in Christ is crucial for every believer. Our identity in Him is secure, complete, transformed, and chosen. It is not based on our own merit but on the perfect sacrifice of Jesus. As we continue to walk in this truth, let us remember to always point others to the good news of the Gospel and the identity that can only be found in Christ.
